In many ways, the data present in the Mandelbrot fractal may be likened
to the clay used by a potter. Both are the raw material which may by
manipulated in various ways to produce either art in the case of a fractal
or a useful object such a vase if using clay.
One of the main considerations when working with fractal data, which
can be near infinite in quantity is how does one go about filtering the
content so that resulting artwork doesn't become so cluttered that it
overwhelms the observer and thus appear less pleasing to the eye.
Bottom line, fractal art tends to look a whole lot like abstract art,
although the spiral form does seem to occur quite often!
Fractal Art

Ever since the discovery of fractals many coloring algorithms
have developed. The development process usually combines
experimentation, mathematical understanding, and the analysis
of the visual results. For instance one of the most complex methods
called the Triangle Inequality Average was used to color the
spiral galaxy type fractal.
For those interested, an abstract in PDF format is available at
the address below which gives a greater in-depth perspective and
more examples.
Or check out fractal triangle inequality in Google images.
If one looks at the classic Mandelbrot ( named after Benoît B. Mandelbrot ), one can see that there are three distinct zones. The Blue zone is
the peripheral area. The Black inner core may be thought of as being
very much like an energetic black hole. Data goes in but nothing ever
comes out! And finally there is the White fringe. It is this area where
one will find all of the so called, chaotic detail that makes the
Mandelbrot Set so remarkable and complex.
Classic Mandelbrot Figure
Mandelbrot emphasized the use of fractals as realistic and
useful models of many rough phenomena in the real world.
Natural fractals include the shapes of mountains, coastlines,
and river basins; the structures of plants, blood vessels and
lungs and the clustering of galaxies.
Fractal Art
By Reverend Steve Waites, M.Th.
Fractals are found in human pursuits, such as music, painting,
architecture, and even influence stock market prices.
Mandelbrot believed that fractals, far from being unnatural,
were in many ways more intuitive and natural than the artificially
smooth objects of traditional linear geometry that had been
understood since classical times.
